THE QUEEN
Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Queen of the Dolomites
The Olympic mountain town at the heart of the day — what to do with your stop between the passes.

Cortina d'Ampezzo sits at 1,224 metres in a broad sunny valley, encircled by some of the Dolomites' greatest peaks — Tofane, Cristallo, Sorapiss. Elegant and pastel-fronted, with a landmark bell tower over its pedestrian main street, it's long been Italy's most glamorous mountain resort, host of the 1956 Winter Olympics and a venue again for the 2026 Games. On a day tour it's usually the civilised heart of the day: the lunch-and-stroll stop between the high, wild sections.
What to do with an hour there
Most tours give you free time in Cortina rather than a guided visit, so make it count. The pedestrian Corso Italia is the place to walk, with cafés, alpine delis and mountain-sports shops; the bell tower and parish church anchor the centre; and simply standing in the square with the rock walls rising on every side is the point. Grab lunch or a coffee and a slice of strudel, and let the town be the day's gentle counterpoint to the peaks.
Why it anchors the day
Geographically Cortina is the hinge of the eastern Dolomites — the roads to the Tre Cime, the Cinque Torri and the great passes all radiate from here — so almost every Venice itinerary passes through it. It's also the day's one reliable place for a proper meal, a bathroom and a browse, which is why tours build the lunch stop around it. After the still lakes and the towering peaks, an hour in a lively mountain town rounds the day out nicely.
Beyond the day trip
If Cortina charms you — and it charms most people — it's the obvious base for a longer Dolomites stay: cable cars up the Tofane, the Cinque Torri open-air war museum, the Lagazuoi tunnels, and the great high passes all within reach. For a day-tripper it's a taste; for a return trip it's a hub. Many people do the Venice day tour first, fall for the mountains, and come back to Cortina for a week.
